Olinda, Pernambuco Brasil

So while in the northeast of Brazil we did a few tours...
First one we did was the City Tour and Olinda..

Olinda is a very historic part of Recife its known for being the Old Recife.. Carnival is really big in the northeast specially in Olinda..

First stop downtown Olinda.. These historical churches were so colorful and so pretty!! Some of them were built in the 1500..

After we saw the main area downtown we headed over to the colorful streets, according to our guide they didn't used to have numbers on the houses so the only way to distinguish them from one another was by color. So each building was a different color and they kept it that way.

Next stop was to visit  the Giant dolls of Olinda.. Very famous during the carnival time. We were able to play with the outfits and see from up close the giant dolls that people carry during carnival in Olinda. This tradition started in Europe in 1900 and was brought to Brazil, the caricatures are mainly famous soccer players like Pele and some others  famous people like Michael Jackson, Frida (the Mexican painter..)

They were taller than Johnny!

Frevo umbrellas ( a dance popular in the Northeast)

Next stop was at the Cultural Center that used to be a prison and its now a cultural center. Pretty interesting...
They sold all kinds of crafts and little sculptures and all other kinds of things ..

They kept the 106 jail cell intact and that was a little creppy to see how the prisoners were kept

After the cultural center we headed to the highest point in Recife were we could look over the city and the ocean.. It was breezy and cool... In the same area there were more shops and some food.. Johnny really liked the tapioca they made there... It was similar to an omelet but made with tapioca flour and for the filling you can choose from sweet or salty options.. coconut and cheese is the most popular there.

It was a long day and Tyler was so tired poor thing...but after this we had one more stop lol

Saint Bento Monastery
Masses are still being held on Sundays there which I thought was pretty cool..

This tour was well worth the price.!!

  1. Oh WOW! I could walk around for days just taking pictures of all the buildings! So beautiful and colorful! And I love learning fun facts like how they didn't have addresses which is why the buildings had different colors! So cool!
